Danish actor Lars Dittmann Mikkelsen was born on May 6, 1964. He has portrayed characters such as Charles Augustus Magnussen in Sherlock’s third season, the Russian president Viktor Petrov in Netflix’s American House of Cards, Troels Hartmann, a contender for the Copenhagen mayor’s office, and Grand Admiral Thrawn in Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka. He received the Reumert Prize of Honor in 2011.

Lars was the first child of occupational health nurse Bente Christiansen and bank clerk Henning Mikkelsen. He was born in the Danish town of Gladsaxe, not far from Copenhagen. Lars was born and raised in Copenhagen, where his brother Mads, who is also an actor, was born approximately a year and a half after him. The family initially resided in the middle-class neighborhood of Sterbro before relocating to the working-class neighborhood of nrrebro.

After finishing high school, he enrolled in the Royal Danish Army. Later, he pursued a biology degree at the University of Copenhagen, but left the program to make a livelihood as a mime and juggler on the streets of European towns.

Career

After traveling for five years as a juggler at the age of 27, Lars made the decision to pursue a career in acting. He submitted an application to the Statens Teaterskole (National Theatre School of Denmark) in Copenhagen, where he was admitted and continued his acting studies from 1991 to 1995.

He made his acting debut in the drama “Dracula” at the Aalborg Theater shortly after that. Lars has performed in more than 40 plays as of this writing (2012) since graduating from the theater program, and he has always wished to continue playing onstage.

He appeared in films and TV shows on a regular basis. He gained even more notoriety when he played the mayoral candidate “Troels Hartmann” in the popular Danish crime series Forbrydelsen (2007) (The Killing).

This resulted in parts in global productions, including that of the villain in an episode of the British television series Sherlock (2010), the Russian president Viktor Petrov in the third season of House of Cards (2013), and the main character in the global crime drama The Team (2015).

He has thus far garnered a number of nominations and accolades for some of his performances in films, plays, and television shows.
