Early Life and Education

Katheryn Winnick, who is of Ukrainian ancestry, was born in Etobicoke, Ontario. Her first language was Ukrainian, and she didn’t start speaking English until she was eight years old. She started learning martial arts at the age of seven, and at the age of 13, she earned her first black belt. She established three Taekwondo schools by the age of 21. While earning her kinesiology degree at York University in Toronto, she taught Taekwondo and self-defense to actors. Winnick attended the William Esper Studio and graduated from it.

Katheryn Winnick began performing when she was a little child at her Toronto community center. While attending Richview Collegiate Institute, she got a scholarship for theater and directing. She had directed plays in high school.


Katheryn Winnick got her start in the movie business by giving martial arts lessons to actors on location; the experience encouraged her to seek a career in acting. Then she was given a role on Student Bodies as a regular.

Since then, she has made several cinematic appearances, including Killers, Failure to Launch, Love & Other Drugs, and Stand Up Guys. In addition to House, The Glades, Bones, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, CSI, CSI: NY, CSI: Miami, Criminal Minds, Person of Interest, and Nikita, she has appeared as a guest star in a number of other TV programs. She played Hannah Burley in the television series Bones, a war journalist assigned to cover the conflict in Afghanistan who ends up falling in love with Seeley Booth, the main character.

The comedy-drama Cold Souls, starring Winnick, made its global premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009. She was chosen for a supporting role on The CW’s espionage program Nikita in 2011. She participated in the comedy The Art of the Steal in 2013 and starred in A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III. She also became a cast member of the History Channel’s Vikings with Travis Fimmel, playing the renowned Viking leader Lagertha. Winnick declared on her Twitter account in July 2017 that she had been cast in what was allegedly a film project and that the casting will be revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con International.

Winnick was said to have been cast in the Netflix series Wu Assassins‘ regular character of Christine “C.G.” Gavin in July 2018. Winnick was cast in the lead role of Jenny Hoyt in the ABC crime drama series Big Sky in February 2020.

Her portrayal of the tenacious shieldmaiden has earned her a number of noteworthy honors, such as the Women’s Image Network Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2018, a Critic’s Choice Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Performance by a Lead Dramatic Actress (2014), Best Actress in a Drama Series nominations from the Women’s Image Network in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and a Golden Maple Award nomination In addition to these honorable nods, Katheryn was presented with the Serendipity Film Award of Excellence at the 2015 Banff World Media Festival. Winnick appeared in the Stephen King adaption The Dark Tower in 2017, which also starred Golden Globe and Academy Award winner Idris Elba and Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey.

Winnick has also appeared in the films Stand Up Guys with Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin, Love & Other Drugs with Jake Gyllenhaal, Killers with Ashton Kutcher, and others. She also appeared in the Paul Giamatti comedy-drama Cold Souls, which was nominated for a 2009 Gotham Independent Film Award for outstanding ensemble performance.

Lesya Winnicki and Roman Winnicki welcomed Katheryn Winnick into the world on December 17, 1977 as Katerena Anna Vinitska in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada. Adam and Markjan Winnick are her two brothers. Her schooling was finished at York University.

Winnick claimed to be “both an American and a Canadian citizen.” Winnick and her mother established the nonprofit organization “The Winnick Foundation” in March 2022 to generate money for Ukraine’s needs. In reaction to Western sanctions, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs prohibited Winnick and 99 other Canadians from entering Russia in November 2022.
